When they’re told that this is the future of the industry, they accept that statement as true. They’ve tried it; understand it and think to themselves: “I see your point, but this isn’t fun any more. This isn’t enjoyable. This is bad for me.” And decide to leave.
But I don’t put any pressure on myself. That might be the secret to the longevity of the site. I don’t worry about running out of things to write about. If I go for a while without writing anything, that’s okay.

Sometimes these things are offensive, but you’re used to voicing them in a more forgiving environment. So when you switch to social media, you don’t adjust your language and tone. You don’t code-switch. You don’t change your vocabulary and approach to suit a more public audience. You might not even be aware that a more public audience was possible. Most of us only have our few followers and friends and people rarely notice our nonsense. But sometimes people do notice and it’s rarely pleasant.
Ideology, in creating a bridge of excuses between the system and the individual, spans the abyss between the aims of the system and the aims of life. It pretends that the requirements of the system derive from the requirements of life. It is a world of appearances trying to pass for reality.

those who control digital platforms and means of communication have a considerable ability to affect the collective imagination and to present a particular vision of reality as desirable. Such power should be constantly guided by the pursuit of truth and respect for human dignity, so that the culture fostered on the internet does not become an instrument of excessive distraction, homogenization or dominance, but rather a setting in which inner freedom and critical thought can mature.

ROOTS: Return Old Online Things to your own Site
The practical consequences of an unexamined inner life at scale are not theoretical. The social media platforms built by people who believed behavioral data was a reliable substitute for understanding human psychology produced a decade of engagement metrics while user wellbeing declined and our entire social order decayed.

Regular readers will know that I have a generally negative view of what I would describe as inhumane content on the web, referring to those monstrosities that are created first and foremost for bots and algorithms (regardless of whether they are created by human beings or bots)
But had I been measured on my contribution by lines of code, or commits, or features finished, it would have been seen as a very unproductive day by my manager.
These arguments over web standards can look dry and pendantic when read many years later, but what they demonstrate is a real desire for the Web to be more than a system for sharing documents. It was becoming clear that users of the Web in 1994 increasingly saw it as a new publishing medium, which meant a need for design tools.

The web, and the internet as a whole, depends on the independence of content and addressing (i.e. domain names) and devices. You must be able to serve and access any kind of content across any domain name on any web device.

An interface that shows you an unread count is making an argument: that reading is something to be counted, that progress is something to be measured, that your relationship to this content is one of obligation.
So here I am, talking about my little arts and crafts and my little mindfulness practice, trying to change the world.
The indie web’s values — autonomy, ownership, open standards, creative agency — give us a perfectly adequate framework for evaluating any technology, including LLMs. The questions worth asking are not “is this made by a corporation?” but rather: does this tool serve or undermine individual ownership of content? Does it strengthen or erode the link culture that makes the indie web navigable? Does it give people more agency or less?
What excites me most is finding people naturally gravitating toward these ideas without necessarily knowing the terminology.
You can still talk about these books without driving people away. You just can’t pretend they exist without context. Everybody today knows about Rowling or Woody Allen. Pretending that context doesn’t exist is insulting.

encouraging developers to form groups that help people host sites using existing tools ... appeals to me a lot more, as I am more interested in hosting an existing tool rather than building a blogging platform from scratch in addition to figuring out hosting. The Fediverse does this well with Mastodon, and I think there is scope for a Mastodon equivalent for long-form blogging.
This is why the practices of linking and subscribing are so important: there’s no other way to expand our indieweb horizons beyond a few popular authors that everyone shares — the indieweb influencers, if you like.

It's interesting how, over time, whether you intend it or not, your site will kind of grow to reflect who you are. There's been quite a number of times I've had a conversation with someone online and realized I've already written about the exact topic we're talking about. By reading all of the posts on here you won't know me as a person, but... You'll get an idea of who I am. Honestly, I wish more people had websites for that reason.
When someone starts openly doubting The Holocaust or saying things that most people would find racist or sexist, my first thought is usually to wonder if or why they thought that it was a good idea to say those things out loud. Some of them seem to think it's an assault on their Free Speech for anyone deciding not to listen to them.
This page is ranked according to the following algorithm: Score = log10(U) + (S / (B * 86,400)); Where, U = Upvotes of a post; S = Seconds since Jan 1st, 2020; B = Buoyancy modifier (currently at 14); B values is used to modify the effect of time on the score. A lower B causes posts to sink faster with time.
As the number of pages grew, I naturally wanted some consistency. I wanted a common layout for my pages, navigation links, a footer that did not need to be edited in twenty places. An early version of this website used HTML frames to accomplish these goals. Later, I rewrote the website in PHP. Now this website is generated using Common Lisp.

This backlash has caught executives with their pants down, because for months and years they were told that AI was the future and everyone was going to love it.
But formality serves a purpose between parties with asymmetric power. It establishes that both sides are taking the interaction seriously. When your banking app talks to you like a toddler, what they're really communicating is that they don't consider your problems worth addressing as an adult.
A /top4 page is a personal webpage where you can share your definitive ranked list of your top 3 favorites and an honorable mention.
If someone else got there first, too bad. And that username only works on that one app anyway. This is silly. The internet has already solved this problem.

Search Engine Optimization is not a legitimate form of marketing. It should not be undertaken by people with brains or souls. If someone charges you for SEO, you have been conned.
In retrospect, the peak years of Flash as a web design technology were 2002 to 2003. When Macromedia released Flash MX (Flash 6) in March 2002, its goal was to enable "a new generation of rich Internet content and applications." Unlike many tech prognostications, this actually became a reality over the next year or two.
The hardest part of web standards isn’t even the technology — it’s the queues. And that’s the real problem I keep coming back to.
Revisiting a 90's classic for the IndieWeb book club
Cutting and pasting blocks of HTML into MySpace came more naturally to teenagers than it did to digital immigrants. Indeed, a big reason why the web itself became popular is the ability to copy existing web designs and reuse for your own purposes — it was as simple as clicking “View Source” in your browser and copying and pasting the code you needed.

These days, client-side JavaScript frameworks don’t abstract away the underlying platform, they instead try to be an alternative. In fact, if you attempt to use web platform features, your JavaScript framework will often get in the way.

It’s not just that the term “AI” isn’t useful, it’s so broad as to be actively duplicitous. While talking about one thing—like, say, large language models—you can point to a completely different thing—like, say, machine learning or computer vision—and claim that they’re basically the same because they’re both labelled “AI”.
In 2000, Flash websites proliferate, blogging expands, social news sites like Slashdot gain influence — all of this while the dot-com bubble slowly deflates and Napster dominates headlines.
Who actually needs to connect with God in Spirit and in truth when you can get a Large Language Model to just spit out words?
This project has been an itch I’ve wanted to scratch for several years, but I never made the time. After configuring my own site’s IndieWeb features years ago, I realised the paid themes I used didn’t properly support IndieWeb tooling. Rather than continue hacking together solutions, I decided to finally build a theme from scratch with IndieWeb principles baked in from the start.
Every time I mentioned these things, a part of me cringes and feels bad because it sounds so self-promoty, but then I get those emails and I’m reminded that the only way for people to know the things you do exist is if you remind them that they do, in fact, exist.

It's time for this month's Indieweb Book Club, where we're reading The Creative Act by Rick Rubin.
The focus of the lenses is to see clearly through the fog of complexity. Leaders, decision makers, managers, and interested parties often are frustrated that their spending on solutions don’t improve the situation. This frustration quite often is adjacent to “we are missing some understanding”.
So here’s an experiment. I’ll write a list of topics I’ve been meaning to turn into blog posts, and a price, and you, oh well-funded reader, can bribe me to finish them.

I found myself introduced to a new world: one where form is looser than any other community I have seen. Posts can be photographs of quotes, where the typography of the photograph and the background adds dimension to the words. Or can be blog post-esque musings about the world. Or stories. Or re-posts of someone else’s work. All in one place, side-by-side.

Regardless of whether or not it's part of this site's visible structure, I do think the 'seasons' approach to running a website / blog is an interesting twist on the traditional way to order a blog — reverse-chronological. This started as a small 88 x 31 badge for my site. Then I went to make an alternate at a different size. But, then I ran across a set of travel stickers for suitcases in a magazine that can be used as intended.
My personal mission is to empower people to make interesting, useful, and inclusive things on the web…and I always love making side projects!
We internalize concepts slowly. Mastery and satisfaction don’t come from the frantic consumption of a hundred different things, but from immersing yourself in one thing, from wrestling with it, from letting it change you. It’s the long email thread with a friend debating a single concept. It’s the quiet hour spent thinking, not just consuming. That is where the real work happens.
And when the primary focus of the business is on the ads, everything else is sort of ancillary — it’s only important insofar as it keeps people around, to look at the ads. It’s jingling keys. It’s… Whatever.
in our collective despair at failing to build one of the myriad of better futures, we’ve resorted to futilely constructing ourselves a better past
“Take Two” was about do-overs, second chances, and the possibility of time travel. But the vast majority of responses I got were pretty adamant that we all get one shot at life and most people would not take a chance for a do-over. I get it! I really enjoyed reading each entry and what follows are excerpts from each
Give me the small web in every way.
It happens when we start treating AI as an infallible oracle rather than the powerful, deeply flawed, and sometimes an outright weird tool. The threats aren’t science fiction anymore; they’re the real-world risks of algorithmic biases getting baked into government policies, a complete lack of accountability when things go wrong, and the potential for some truly catastrophic, unexplainable errors.
Using a 1980s camcorder as a webcam in 2023. It works!
I'm very happy how this looks and I have all sorts of ideas for more plugins to write.
And now I don’t particularly care about wide viewership; I am more interested in the discourse, in the community. (((Same. - Joe)))
Promotion is hard, and I really wish I knew why people seem to think YouTube is a good place to put my podcast.
The idea is that drawing can help you write, and writing can help you draw, and you figure out things that you missed the first time around.
as much as i like the idea of being open about everything, i think the reality of it in the context of a personal website is scarier than i thought it would be.
I wish the web was a safe place where this could happen much more often
A real copilot, on a commercial airline? They know the plane. The systems. They’ve done the simulations. They go through recertification. When they speak, it’s to enhance the pilot... Not to shotgun random advice into the cockpit and eject themselves mid-flight.
When we make websites difficult for bots and scrapers to use, we have the unintentional side-effect of making website difficult for assistive technologies to use.
We must all learn a deeper form of strength for these times, I think.
Move to your own little island archipelago on the internet.
when I saw infinity, I immediately thought of a great use case
We need to move beyond a Mastodon vs. Bluesky mindset. As I’ve blogged several times, they are solving slightly different problems. We can draw inspiration from each one to make the web more open. I want both to exist.
But the process of uncovering truth is often a messy and long one.
We will always need voices making sense of the events in our time.
